The Nanite Garden, 2024
Spencer Yard, Leamington Spa Cultural Quarter, Warwickshire
Produced for Complex Development Projects and Warwick District Council. Winner of the Leamington Society Art 2024.

<img width="6280" height="5024" width_o="6280" height_o="5024" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/cfee3b7b91ea8b9bdc42b798e0f6a38373a147e1dc47176e7291ce73b31f0503/070224Sculpture_42.jpg" data-mid="220458364" border="0" data-scale="72" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/cfee3b7b91ea8b9bdc42b798e0f6a38373a147e1dc47176e7291ce73b31f0503/070224Sculpture_42.jpg" />

	This public art commission for Spencer Yard, Leamington Spa, draws inspiration from the town’s significant gaming industry. It responds to the site’s history as the home to the Camofleurs and its future use as digital creative production hub, and home of The Fold.
It combines state-of-the-art digital techniques such as digital sculpting and 5-axis milling,&nbsp; with traditional hand-crafting. The&nbsp; 1,000s of small multi-coloured triangles, carefully colour-matched to those of the Nanite technology the artwork is referencing, were hand painted.

The artwork considers the effect of digital animation and visualisation on both art and the lived experience, and how this relates formally and conceptually to the Camoufleurs; artists who had been enlisted to creatively camouflage and protect sensitive sites in the UK, and were based at the site. Put simply, the Camoufleurs were commissioned to use artistic techniques to distort perception and a sense of reality. Today, the biggest distortions to our perception are created in the virtual world but impact the physical, where what is fake and what is real becomes harder and harder to distinguish and is even a matter of conjecture.

As if dropped from a digital or virtual world, the sculptures instigate a moment of surprise, consideration and reflection. The source material is ‘off-the-shelf’ digital assets created in Game Engines using Nanite-enabled meshes. Nanite Triangle Visualization is a high specification digital rendering tool that allows images to hold their detail in fast paced games or movies. Nanite Virtualized Geometry by Unreal Engine, and other proprietary processing systems, are changing the face of digital content possibilities.

	“Unless you know there’s a gaming hub here you will not see anything about it on the street level. There’s a sense that these big game studios all feel completely separate with their individual campuses all off in different places.”
Shaun Wall, local games developer.

	Sculpting Practice – Catching a Train on the Move, London 2015

Written by Marsha Bradfield &amp; Lucy Tomlins
Fast forward twenty years: If asked to reflect back on the most pressing developments in the practice of sculpture in London 2015, what would you say? This publication responds to this question as a kind of time capsule of this historical moment, through the lens of three themes: ‘Adventures in Material and Space’; ‘Public Sculpture, Public Art’ and ‘Ambition and Afterlife’.

The present described here springs from the perspective of Pangaea Sculptors’ Centre (PSC) but also draws on the insights of peers, colleagues and associates as reflections move between the micro and the macro, from a fleeting episode in PSC’s recent residency, to scanning the wider cultural landscape, as we attempt to make sense of our lived experience as practitioners in London 2015.

Those featured include: Anthony Caro, Barry Flanagan, Byzantia Harlow, Emily Motto, Jamie Fitzpatrick, Revital Cohen &amp; Tuur van Balen, Matthew de Kersaint Girauedeau, David Rickard, muf architecture / art, Alex Chinneck, Andrew Ranville, Marjetica Potrc &amp; Ooze, Frances Richardson, Naum Gabo, Christine Kozlov, Anne Hardy and Heatherwick Studio.

This publication is funded by: The Henry Moore Institute, Arts Council England, The Estate of Barry Flanagan and The Cecil and Hilda Lewis Charitable Trust.

	Should buildings be made out materials designed to outlive their useful life? Should we return to traditional structures and techniques that are low cost but labour intensive with minimal environmental impact? How can we look to nature to lead innovation in the built environment?

Mycelium - the thread-like underground root network of fungi; a biodegradable alternative to plastic and new sustainable building material.

	Cob - a natural building material made from subsoil, water, fibrous organic material (typically straw), and sometimes lime.&nbsp;

Akin to a cob structure, I learnt a technique using unfired caly, straw and risk husks on a 2020 Coventry City of Culture / British Council research trip to work with the Kumartuli of Kolkata, India. This process lends itself to durational or temporary installation, as the materials will break down and can be returned to the earth with rain / water.

	Mario Merz - Igloo, Do We Go Around Houses, or Do Houses Go Around Us? &nbsp;1977, reconstructed 1985In 1971 the artist described the igloo as 'the ideal organic shape … both a world and a small house … a synthesis, a complex image'. Merz's igloos are primitive forms of shelter and habitation. Both self-contained worlds and small houses, they attempt to answer the artist's own questions: 'is space straight or curved? Do houses move round you or do you move round houses? What does making a house mean?' (quoted in Marlis Grüterich, 'Mario Merz', Data, no.21, May-June 1976, pp.45-6).

Tim Ingold - &nbsp;The Life of LinesTim Ingold is British anthropologist and Chair of Social Anthropology at the University of Aberdeen. In his recent work, he links the themes of environmental perception and skilled practice, replacing traditional models of genetic and cultural transmission, founded upon the alliance of neo-Darwinian biology and cognitive science, with a relational approach focusing on the growth of embodied skills of perception and action within social and environmental contexts of human development. This has taken him to examining the use of lines in culture (Lines: a brief hostory), and the relationship between anthropology, architecture, art and archaeology (Making).
